Simply having a green card doesn’t mean you’re through with the tedious paperwork and immigration procedures. It also doesn’t mean that you can remain in the US infinitely. What it means is that you are authorized to reside and seek employment in the U.S.
How Long Is A Green Card Valid?
Even though there are a few green cards with no expiration date, most expire in 10 or 2 years. You can find your expiration date on the front of the card near the bottom, after your biographical information.
Even with no expiration date, we recommend you still renew your green card or call USCIS to inquire. Most older cards are no longer valid so you could be making things difficult for yourself by not renewing them.
If you are a green card holder and age 18 or older, federal law always requires you to carry your valid green card. If you fail to comply with this law, you can be charged with a misdemeanor. So, it’s very important to know your expiration date.
How Do I Renew An Expired Green Card?

Typically, green cards issued to lawful permanent residents are only valid for 10 years, except for conditional green cards. Those are only valid for two years and require a petition to be filed before expiration to remove the conditions of residency.
If your green card expiration date is approaching, it is best to renew it as soon as possible. Renewing a green card can take up to six months.
Therefore, it’s best to file for renewal at least six months ahead of your expiration date. An expired green card could get in the way activities such as buying a house or taking a trip abroad.
You will need to file a Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card to get your card renewed.
More On Older Versions of Green Cards
Green Card With No Expiration Date
As mentioned above there are some older versions of green cards that don’t have an expiration date. That doesn’t mean they don’t still need to be renewed. Quite the opposite actually—some aren’t valid anymore and need replacing. If you have one of these older cards, you always need to keep a Form I-551 on you.
This form serves as proof that you are a lawful permanent resident until you get an updated green card.
Even though your green card version may not expire and may remain valid, these older versions can still cause problems. The biggest issue is re-entering the US after traveling abroad or back to your home country to visit.
Agents at points of entry along the border have quite a bit of discretion when determining to let you back in the U.S. or not. If your card is so worn that your photo makes it hard to make a positive ID, you could be denied re-entry.
